Thanks for letting us know the sad news about that redbud tree. It was planted by the Greenspace volunteers, so we'll check with that team and make a plan for the tree.
The Greenspace group plans to replant a different species of tree here. Call URI Tues-Sat at 203-627-6262 and ask for Angela if you would like to help with the planting.
these trees cost a lot of money to buy through URI. They die because no one had to pay for them directly. Are we not better off giving a tax incentive for owners to plant trees? I see a lot of URI curb work. Some of it is nice, some if it is a mess because they are not maintained. What a shame and a waste of taxpayer dollars.
Thank you, URI. To Dell Cladder's point, in this particular case, the tree was watered by residents last summer, but the heat during the stretch right after the tree was planted was just too much for the young tree. It died, but not for lack of effort, as far as I can tell. I for one really appreciate URI's efforts throughout New Haven and enjoy seeing the newly planted trees all over New Haven. I look forward to the day when many of these new trees mature and help bring some natural cooling to the city on sweltering days like today.
We're working with the homeowner, URI and the Westville Greenspace Group on replacing that tree this summer. I am not sure what the survival rate with newly planted street trees tends to be, but given that we planted and stewarded (with business and property owners) 25 trees in Westville Village last summer and this is the only one that did not survive, overall we are very happy with the results. Dell, I respectfully disagree with your assessment that this is a waste of taxpayer money - my experience working with URI and the stewarding program is that the program is highly successful and a tremendous boon to the City. I encourage you to join our efforts if you're interested - we'll be planting tonight at Whalley & Blake, in fact, 5:30pm.
